A gambler visits a very rich and powerful lady to play high stakes poker. He loses all of his money and he even has to leave his beautiful wife as a maid serving the rich lady. We see an inverted cinderella-story: The 'princess' is converted to a tortured and humiliated poor maid. And as an aside, we see plenty of whippings and canings of the lady's maids.
